Life Lately

Hello friends,

Life has been extremely busy lately, thus the radio silence on the blog here. So many holiday events, get togethers with friends, observations at work, prepping for Christmas and time in Tahoe.

Our neighbors got a wood-fired mini pizza oven, and we made our first batch a few weeks ago. They were amazing!!

I went to a pearl tea place with a friend and these were their signs outside. I loved it!

This was a cute birthday card given to a co-worker at ND, and i thought it was supercute. #ilovealpacas

My brother and I baked apple donuts for the first time and they were deliiiish. I liked the donut holes the best!img_7553

To go with the apple donuts we made chili and I made the cornbread. Yum.

Also, we bought a Christmas tree….and then I got one for my house, and then one for my brother’s house. That’s how we ended up with 3 trees!

My tree all decorated. It only leans a little as it was hard to tell if it was straight in the tree holder as I live by myself.

I made biscotti as a holiday gift for friends, family and co-workers. I make both snickerdoodle and gingersnap! So tasty, I ate so many during the first batch there weren’t many to share.

Kim’s family had me over for their thanksgiving holiday party this past Sunday at their new house in San Carlos. I had so much fun, we did a while elephant exchange.

That’s it, life has been good and busy, but I promise I get back to posting more often!!

Love,

Birthday Cupcakes

Birthday Cupcakes

So I celebrated my birthday basically all of that week. We started with Brunch at the Ritz, family dinner on Wednesday, and a small celebration with my friends at my new apartment on Friday. I invited a ton of people, but somehow Fall and October in particular is crazy busy for people.

My friend Mick (hi Mick!) brought these amazing cupcakes from this great bakery in Los Gatos, my brother and his roomie came and made guacamole. I had a ton of cheese and snacks and totally forgot to take a group photo, or any photos outside of food (clearly my priorities were elsewhere!)

It was a great evening. How do you like to celebrate your birthday? Do you like to binge on sweets like me?

SF MoMa

The city

We walked to SF Moma and the sky was so pretty!

A few weekends back, my parents and our lovely neighbors drove up to the city to meet their daughter and her beaux for an outing and dinner at their house. She invited us up to explore SF Moma, which has only recently opened in May after their 3 year long closure due to renovations. I was pretty excited to see both the building and the artwork. Although my personal artistic preference runs more to the classics, I do always enjoy seeing what’s hot in the modern art world.

The museum design with crisp and clean, with beautiful white maple floors. We explored floors in groups of two or threes.  My dad and partnered up as we were both particularly interested in two exhibits: California and the West: a photography exhibit and the Pop, Minimal and Figurative Art. I love Andy Warhol, and Chuck Close’s portraits and so I was looking forward to seeing some of their work in person.

We ended up getting a snack halfway though in their Cafe 5 restaurant, and the coconut milk curry soup I had was delicious.

I think my absolute favorite exhibit that I saw that day was called Typeface Interface, and looked critically at the role graphic design and words have played in important communication tools like subway maps, band posters and ads. Their artist statement above describes it so much if you are up for a quick read.

Have you been to SF MoMa yet? Any exhibits you’d like to look at?

Nantucket Day 3

Tuesday morning my dad and I walked down to a local coffeeshop, where we had discovered they made not only an excellent espresso for my father, but a sweet and strong chai for me. Not all coffeeshops have a good chair, so once you find a place, put your feet down and stay a while. The Handlebar Cafe was once of those places. While the interior was charming and comfy, the fresh air and corner garden was where we lounged the most. It had a “secret garden” feel to it with ivy winding around arbors, and small table sets. We spent most of the morning there as my brother slept off his cold.

We looked into a few stores, and walked down to the pier where all the ferries take off from. We decided to go to the Brotherhood of Thieves for lunch upon recommendation from our at home neighbor, who is now a second year college student, a far cry from the little girl I babysat and came to this island with so many moons ago. I had a fantastic pot pie (i am picky about having a flaky crust and enough filling) along with a yummy summer salad. I had never had Spindrift before, so I might have had two of those with lunch!

Spindrift

We ended up back at the house with a Redbox movie to watch and enjoyed a mellow evening at the house as a family lounging on the couch.

Have you ever had a really good chicken pot pie? Are you particular about the crustiness of your bread as well?
