Do you want to build a snowman?

On Friday, Annie, Adrian and I drove up to my parents cabin in Tahoe. It snowed the whole weekend, which was perfect for us to get some fresh powder. When we had gone up at Christmas, it had looked a little bare and brown.

The new snow transformed everything into a sleepy wonderland. We slept in, made tasty food, and watched the Winter Olympics while it snowed. Later on Saturday, we played in the snow, had snowball fights, sledded down the the hill in the backyard, and built some funny looking snow-women, in our case. Annie and I made Dwight, a two-headed dinosaur woman complete with a spiky tail. Adrian made a handsome Kirby. Huyson joined us later in the day after we rescued him from not one, but two sticky spots on hills.

On Sunday, we got in some time on slopes at North Star, and treated ourselves to a tasty lunch at the Chocolate Bar. Mhmmm.

All in all, it was a perfect little weekend. Exactly what this girl needed!

Now I just have to make it through till Saturday, when my family and I leave for the Grand Cayman Islands. I am so looking forward to some sunshine, warm air, laying out on the beach with a good book, and those drinks with the little umbrella’s. I can’t wait to feel some sunshine on my face.

It’s almost Friday! How is your week going? Are you as ready as I am for this week to be over?

Why, Hello February

January was such a busy month!

This cute little thing just came in the mail! I always love getting new Kiel James Patrick boxes, because they come with the cutest packaging!

I was able to knock 7 things off my 101 in 1001 list. Wahoo!

1. Inspire someone to write their own list (Yay)
2. Go wine tasting with friends or family (Napa Valley was so beautiful)
35. Organize my Itunes
39. Find my signature cocktail (Lemondrop, oh so yummy)
63. Buy a plane ticket with frequent flier miles only (the Santa Fe trip in March)
98. Get a hammock (Given to me by the lovely Maureen!!)

Done and done!

I have a few more items I plan to cross off in the works for February, so it should be a great month!

It felt like every weekend in January was jam-packed, from going to Napa, having friends over for fun cocktails, to babysitting basically every day of the weekend. February looks to be as busy as January was, complete with a trip with friends to Tahoe and a family trip to the Cayman Islands (eeek!!). This may or may not have contributed to the radio silence here on the blog.

Work is going well, and teaching full-time makes for a busy day, but I have been slowly carving out gym time, which has been good to get back in my life. I have a dinner date set up with Annie and my favorite old proff to discuss the masters program at SCU for this fall. I’m both alternatively stoked and dreading going back to night classes.

I finally set up a savings plan so I now can look forward to one day having a fancy-pants camera and a KS watch sometime in the next year or so.

Oh, and February is my no-spending month, so wish me luck!

We had such a grey, rainy, perfect for snuggling with the pups weekend. I babysat for a lot of the weekend, but did manage to get in a few hours working on my quilt. It was a great way to finish out the week.

Happy February!

Wine Tasting in Napa

On Saturday, the Roomie, my brother, Alex and I drove up to Napa and enjoyed some wine tasting at two lovely vineyards. I had never been to Napa, so I was pretty excited to explore the area and see some new sites.

It was a cold and misty day, but that did not diminish our excitement or trip in anyway. It was a lovely drive, winding up through the City and I snapped a few photos to document the lovely day, as wine tasting was on my 101 in 1001 list. It has been so much fun to cross things off my bucket list!

We stopped for breakfast at this charming little red cafe, called Boon Fly Cafe, after which we enjoyed the first vineyard, William Hill. We tasted a few wines, and then wandered over to ZD Wines. It was a dark and gloomy day, so it was fun to sip some wines, sit indoors and chat away.

Today I ran a bunch of errands, and got in a bit of shopping with the Roomie & Grant. Last night, I  watched West Wing while cuddling with the pups. It was a busy weekend, but filled with fun things.

How was your weekend? What was your favorite thing you did all weekend? Have you even been wine tasting?

New Year’s Eve

We were a full house for New Year’s Eve, all total I think 11. For the last two year’s we have had a tradition of having a steak for dinner on NYE. We also ate a ton of veggies and mashed potatoes. We had some cocktails, played some wii earlier in the day and just enjoyed the day together. A few of us pulled on some sparklier clothes, but for the most part it was a pretty casual evening.

I mean, after dinner we worked on a puzzle. Crazy, right?!

Monday was my first day back at work, and tomorrow we see our students. I’m looking forward to starting over with them. For the past few it has been pretty low-key, and I have been liking every minute of it. I know before Christmas it was crazy, chaotic and rushed. Having this last week and a half to recharge has been great. Sometimes you just need some you-time.

I hope your NYE was as delightful as mine was!

I’m also organising things to knock off my 101 in 1001 list. Check it out if you haven’t already!

J. Crew Bow Heels

I was browsing the J.Crew website, as I often do, and ran across these little beauties. It took all my willpower not to buy them immediately, but I may end up treating myself closer to Christmas.

I love everything about them: the ankle strap, the bow placement, and the closed toe cap! Surprisingly enough, I like them in both colors, black and pink, which is very dangerous.

I would wear the pink heels to work and brunches, and the black heels to parties and evenings out.

What do you think? Would you get them? Have you seen anything on the J.Crew website that has been calling your name?

Happy Monday!

Sandy and Maryah’s Stella and Dot Trunk Show!

The Roomie and I had decorated our tree earlier last week and I think it looks adorable, but most importantly it also makes our little house feel very Christmas-y!

Our baby Christmas Tree.

It was perfect because on Saturday the Roomie and I hosted our very own first Stella and Dot Party with Christina Saur Papoulias! It was such a blast to look at some beautiful jewels and have some girl time. Our kitchen has never looked so classy!

Christina made our place look so beautiful! She had so many cute things, it was hard to pick what I was going to order, because I liked everything. But, I’m in love with their poufs! I want one in every color! How cute are these two?!

The Roomie got the Tech Wallet in the Striped at a friend’s Stella and Dot Party last month, and I am super jealous how cute AND organized it is! It holds her phone, wallet and clips her keys!

It was a fantastic opportunity to do some Christmas shopping for my friends and family. I also got to use my cute new glasses that I picked up during Thanksgiving holiday break.

We had a whole lot of fun, and even dressed the pups up in some sparkly jewels! While they were patient for their treats, they were also very wiggly!

I ordered a few things, as did the roomie (including this super cute purse!!). Here is some good news: even if you weren’t able to make it on Saturday, you can still order  some fabulous jewelry!

If you use our link before Deceember 28th, and spend more than 50$ you will get free shipping! How awesome is that?! Normally shipping can be an extra few dollars that I would much rather spend on an extra something for myself! Now, you can do that for sure! I know I have my eye on a few more cute things!

Shop now at Sandy and Maryah’s Stella and Dot Trunk Show!

Happy Shopping ladies! (And gents, there are some great gift ideas there!)

Thanksgiving and Black Friday Shopping

I wanted to thank everyone for all the lovely notes on being nervous about my dentist appointment. It went well. :]

This week I took a hiatus from the blog, because I wanted to focus on family time, relaxing with the pups, and taking a breather from school/work. I also have realised that my computer sucks me in, and then it’s four hours later and I’m still on pinterest/bloglovin’/keep. I have been trying to stay more grounded lately, and less time on my computer. I love to snuggle up with the pups and a book, and that happened a lot this week.

Anyhoo, Thanksgiving was awesome. It was a small group this year, but that did not mean our menu was any smaller. In fact, I believe this year we topped out with the most recipes in a long time. The final number was 12 by the way. We made so many tasty things, but I managed to try a bite of everything!

Thanksgiving and Christmas are the two occasions where the family goes all out, and I really enjoy hearing the family stories about the carving tools, glassware and old family traditions.

My favorite part of our thanksgiving meal.

On Friday, the Roomie, her brother and I got up before the crack of dawn (2am, to be precise) and went to the mall. I had never gone shopping on Black Friday, and I wanted to try it, at least once.

Most of the shops had opened at 5-8pm on Thanksgiving, and the rest at midnight. We arrived at 3 and it was busy, but certainly not insane. We shopped, and the John was a complete dear. He even met up with us, and carried our bags to the car! Maryah treated him to a Jersey as a thank-you for being so kind about the whole day.

I made out like a bandit, but some were Christmas and birthday gifts for other people. More details on what I got tomorrow!

My Black Friday shopping haul.

My Black Friday shopping haul.

This year I was very thankful that everyone was here for Thanksgiving. I know some families aren’t able to all be together on Thursday, but we were, and it really meant a lot to me. In the past, with both of us away at college, it was tricky to get all four of us together. Thanksgiving and Christmas Day are the two that I have the fondest family memories of, and I really do treasure the time we have together.

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksiving, and enjoyed some relaxed family time.

A taste of elegance: Chanel

The past few days have been a whirl-wind of rushing from one fun event to the next. Since this weekend was a blast, but left me feeling very low on the energy scale, my best friend Annie has graciously written a guest post for me. Enjoy!

————————————————–

“Wow, you look fancy today,” said one of my favorite fourth period students.

“Yeah,” chimed in another. “Are you going out tonight?”

“No,” I said. “Stop asking awkward questions. Can’t I look alright sometimes?”

“You can,” Student #1 mused. “But you don’t always.”

This is what my morning fashion process looks like now:

1. Get up at the ass crack of dawn, rub off last night’s makeup that I forgot to take off because I fell asleep grading essays.
2. Shower while trying to figure out what the hell I’m going to teach to my first period class. Sometimes forget to use my expensive salon conditioner because I’m going over the difference between predicates and prepositions.
3. Mentally create worksheets as I rifle through a goddamn avalanche of clothing (which is not kept in the closet, but helpfully spread out on the floor should I suddenly collapse from the onset of anemia).

4. Try to remember if I have essays hidden somewhere in my house as I put on the least smelly clothes I have been able to forage. Laundry is a thing that happens once a fiscal quarter.

5. Haphazardly put on makeup as I drive to work, occasionally forgetting that I have only completed work on one eye and being mocked by my students until some angel in fourth period dutifully informs me of my deficiency.

How could this happen to me, to ME? Five years ago, I was living it up at the BCBG New York Fashion Week after party, trying to pretend I was old enough to be drinking. Now, it’s a good week if I don’t wear the same pants three times. But just as things looked their darkest, something new entered my life, something capable of breaking the downward spiral and restoring me to my former glory.

I’m talking about makeup.

I have discovered that one of the secrets of the universe is that even if you have unwashed, flipping-the wrong-way hair, crumpled clothes, and an unfortunate musty odor about your person, this can all by transformed with a coat of red lipstick and dramatic eyeliner. And purple mascara. All of which I now own, courtesy of Chanel.

But wait, I can hear you thinking, Chanel is so pretentiousI can’t afford that! And my response to you is a) yes it is, and b) you can’t afford not to be buying this.

I went to the Chanel counter for makeup trials with a friend, and when I asked her if I should buy the bronzer, she said “I think you can probably get that cheaper somewhere else.” My makeup artist injected here to give my friend the hairy eyeball from up high and said, “Honey, of course you can get it cheaper elsewhere. This is Chanel.” And I scoffed then, thinking this was arrogance at its finest and that she needed to take her product a little less seriously. But when I got home and tried it, I realized why this woman went all Grand Duchess on my friend – Chanel is, quite simply, the best. It stays where you put it until you take it off. It goes on smoothly, silently, and deadly. It does what is promised. And it looks like it’s going to last just as long as they said it would, which is roughly 230,947,202 years.

Here’s what I bought/recommend:

-liquid eyeliner

-red lipstick

-foundation

-lipliner (I use it as an ombre lip effect and also bottom eyeliner

-purple mascara

My makeup artist also taught me a little trick that has really changed the way I do my makeup. Instead of using eyeliner on your bottom lid edge, you can use a dark brown or dark purple eye shadow and a small brush to gently dot it on. This softens your eye and prevents raccoon eyes or dark circles. I would have bought an eyeshadow palette, but I already have about 20 Lancome eyeshadows at home, many of which are perfect for this use.

Anyway, I hope that this makeup review will help you continue to not do laundry and be lazy about your style choices, just like it has done for me!

Happy Monday! I only have a two-day week, but I am still counting down the hours til my break begins. Are you doing that as well?

Sunday in Capitola

Rather late Saturday night we moved the party to Beach House #2 (BH#2) and continued on very late into the night. I snagged a bed and crashed about 2am, rather late for this old lady who prefers 10pm sharp.

On Sunday I woke up bright and early. Often my internal alarm clock wakes me up when I would rather have slept in. I started on breakfast for the group and enjoyed watching people stumble in, semi-awake. After a while, the group was fed and drowsy. We tidied up the house, and some people took of. The smaller group left for the beach. Annie, Sunny, Huyson and I wandered along the beach, snagging cute photos of each other. We walked around the down-town area and picked up some tasty ice cream. We tidied the house and left for home.

It was a great weekend.

I wish more were like that, full of sunshine, fresh air and friends. I am so looking forward to Thanksgiving foods next week, it is powering me through this week, knowing next week will be fantastic and full of yummy foods!

Beach Weekend in Capitola

Earlier in the week my best friend Annie had made a Facebook event about a few of us going to Capitola and staying at a combination of two beach houses. Work was stressful and looking forward to spending the weekend at the beach helped me keep it together. For me, having things to look forward to can often make or break a crazy work-week.

Saturday dawned, and I had not yet packed, purchased a camera charger/cord, or filled my tank with gas. Rushing around happened but Annie, Sunny and I finally got on the road after a few setbacks.

There wasn’t much traffic and we arrived in Capitola where it was beautiful. We grabbed groceries and went to the beach. The plan for dinner was cook-out at Marcos’s. We took a hot mess of photos not only at the beach, but also back at Beach House #1 (BH1)

IMG_7402 IMG_7439

The crew was: Brady, Sunny, Claire, Dana, Natasha, Annie, Greg #1, Greg #2, Sunny Maxey, Darius, Huyson, Steven, Deawodi, Gloria, Marcos, Irina, Jason and myself. More people came later, but I think this is everyone that was a good sport about being documented in the lovely photos above.

It was the perfect weekend: food, friends, and lots of fun.The beautiful beach never hurts as well!

Hope you had a good weekend!More fun things are planned, but this was the best fun I’ve had this month!
