New Years Eve in Tahoe

My family has a tradition. Typically a day or two after Christmas, we head for Tahoe. A tradition that started many years ago, is now set in stone. We tidy up the house after the Christmas chaos, pack up the car with all of our stuff and a dog, and drive up to our cabin for a gloriously lazy week.

Occasionally, we are lucky enough to get a fresh dump of snow right before we head up, but the last few years the snow has been in scarce supply. We watch tons of movies, jump in the hot tub, cook great meals, and usually have friends that a day or two before moving on to another holiday event.

Some years, its a bigger group for Christmas Eve, like last year we were 21 total (kids and adults!). This year, was a smaller group. With both my brother and I working full-time jobs, we have come to value our weekends and family time. This year, our group in Tahoe was much, much smaller.

We started NYE off at a neighbor’s party, where I promptly put on this great hat. After a while, we wandered back to my house, where we played board games until the wee hours of the night.

A crackling fire at our backs, fizzy drinks in our hands, good friends by our sides, we rung in the new year.

I’m going up to Tahoe again with friends in a week or so, and I’m looking forward to relaxing, watching movies, and playing in the snow again. Tahoe is one of the few places where we unplug, sleep in, breathe in the mountain air, and relax. I love it there.

New Year’s Eve

We were a full house for New Year’s Eve, all total I think 11. For the last two year’s we have had a tradition of having a steak for dinner on NYE. We also ate a ton of veggies and mashed potatoes. We had some cocktails, played some wii earlier in the day and just enjoyed the day together. A few of us pulled on some sparklier clothes, but for the most part it was a pretty casual evening.

I mean, after dinner we worked on a puzzle. Crazy, right?!

Monday was my first day back at work, and tomorrow we see our students. I’m looking forward to starting over with them. For the past few it has been pretty low-key, and I have been liking every minute of it. I know before Christmas it was crazy, chaotic and rushed. Having this last week and a half to recharge has been great. Sometimes you just need some you-time.

I hope your NYE was as delightful as mine was!

I’m also organising things to knock off my 101 in 1001 list. Check it out if you haven’t already!

Ringing in the New Year in Tahoe

Last Friday the family, Roomie, my brother’s best friend Alex, and I drove up to Tahoe. On Saturday, our good friend Shannon joined us, and Gabe and Amy joined us on Sunday. We have been enjoying a lazy few days here in Tahoe. We have been taking long walks with the pups, playing lots of wii, and watching too much television. We eat yummy meals and sleep lots. In short, Tahoe is all about taking a break from life and work.

We are going to start cooking a delicious steak for dinner, along with a few other things. We plan on playing Settlers of Catan or Citadels in front of a roaring fire after dinner until the New Year rings in.

Earlier today, Amy and I took a short walk and I snapped a few photos. I hope everyone has someone to ring in the New Year with!

The weather has been warm and sunny, although I wish there was fresh snow to sled and play in. While there isn’t much snow, the pup has enjoyed finding the small patches and rolling around in them.

Happy New Year’s Eve!
