Recently I’ve been into watching Netflix documentaries on the fashion industry. I love that Netflix allows you to rate a movie that you have seen, and then gives you similar movies to watch.

A few that had popped onto my radar, that I ended up watching over the last few weeks were the following: The September Issue, The First Monday in May, Dior and I, and Yves Saint Laurent.

The September Issue

I ended up liking this movie a lot more than I thought I would. It really gives you a great “behind the scenes” feeling to Vogue, and I learned a lot about the process and timeline of making a magazine issue. I really enjoyed seeing the different dynamics between the different editors and Anna Wintour. I also loved seeing Anna interact with her daughter, who is most decidedly not going to follow in her famed footsteps.

The First Monday in May

I really enjoyed the cinematography of this movie. It follows Andrew Bolton who is the Costumes Institute Curator at the Met prepare the 2015 China Through the Looking Glass exhibit for the Met Gala. They did a beautiful job showcasing the amazing art in the collection, and the detailed and delicate process of curating such a large exhibit. It is a star studded event, so it was fun to see the drama of the seating chart dilemmas. I’ve always been a big fan of watching this event on television, so I liked seeing how intricate and how early they start developing a theme and plan for the Met Gala.

Dior and I

Dior and I followed the Christian Dior Fashion House as fashion designer Raf Simons prepares his first haute couture collection. This movie had none of the glitz and glamour of the first two movies, instead it showcases the labor of love the seamstresses and designers really have for the craft. My favorite part was seeing all the exterior shots of the different French buildings.

Yves Saint Laurent

I was really expecting to like this movie. Netflix had given me three hits, so why wouldn’t this movie be more of the same? Sadly, I didn’t really enjoy this movie. I struggled through watching it. The main character Yves seemed immature and odd. The only character I felt like was well developed was his business partner and lover played by Guillaume Gallienne. The famous designers demons are in full force in this movie, and I felt it really detracted from the great art of his work: designing his couture line. Sometimes movies with subtitles are harder to follow sometimes, and perhaps that added difficulty to understanding the scenes. The scenes where they filmed in France (The InterContintental and Avenue Marceau ) were gorgeous.  I would say if you have a bunch of free time, and don’t mind his vices of drugs, drink and sex, then go for it. Otherwise, skip this one. The first three movies were much better. Sorry Netflix, this movie was a total miss for me.

Bucket Bags

I know it’s a few weeks after, but I was looking at some photos from NYFW and I saw so many bucket bags. It’s clear they are a style that has been around for a while, so it might be time to invest in one.
I tend to go for a unique style purse in a color I know I will use. I tend to wear a lot of white, navy and black, and prefer my purses in camel, navy or black. Some of the above ones are just too cute for me to pass over, but would be a seasonal purse, (like the mint and rose would be great for spring/summer)

4th of July Outfits

 

I am so looking forward to 4th of July this year. We will be back from Nantucket just a few days before, and I hope to have a few tasty cocktails by the pool before watching the fireworks. I have a special red and white and blue striped shirt that I basically save all year to wear on 4th of July and I love it.

Straw Totes

One thing I’ve been keeping my eye on to pick out for summer is a new straw tote. They are perfect for loading up a bunch of things for a day at the beach, or running a few errands. I found a few at different price points, that all scream summer to me! They also seem so adorable, and perfect for different summer events, like picnics, or a light summer lunch out with girlfriends.

How do you feel about straw totes? Do you have one that you use when you spend a day at the beach with friends?

High Style

About two weeks ago, my mum and I drove up to SF to see an amazing exhibit with our friend Lisa at the Legion of Honor museum.  Quite possibly one of my favorite museums, (next to the Met) we were interested in a couture fashion traveling exhibit on loan from the Brooklyn Museum.

The exhibit included ball gowns, day wear, bathing suits, and accessories from major designers (think french couture and some American woman designers) from 1910 to 1980. Everything was beautifully lit, and all the costumers were still in great condition. I had seen some of these items in fashion coffee table books, but it was pretty cool to see some of these iconic pieces in real life.

After a long morning at the museum, we drove to lunch at the Beach Chalet. I had a delicious carbonara pasta with an amazing pomegranate blueberry lemonade.

We had an amazing view of the beach and the water as we ate. I would eat there so often if I lived closer to SF.  It is only a 1.5 hour drive up to the city but i don’t go every often, so every time I go it feels like a fun treat!

I’ve had this song basically on repeat for the whole week leading up to Christmas. Oxford University’s all male a cappella group called Out of the Blue is hands down amazing, and adorable.

Greenpeace set up a camera for a time-lapse video at Glacier National Park, that was disturbed by a tiny, cute, and very curious marmot

I stumbled across this amazing blog called Sea of Shoes, which is a fashion blog, and the author went to one of the premiere debutante balls in Paris in 2013. The photos, the dresses, the decorations, the girls, everything is divine! There’s tons more photos on her website if you follow the above link.

J. Crew Bow Heels

I was browsing the J.Crew website, as I often do, and ran across these little beauties. It took all my willpower not to buy them immediately, but I may end up treating myself closer to Christmas.

I love everything about them: the ankle strap, the bow placement, and the closed toe cap! Surprisingly enough, I like them in both colors, black and pink, which is very dangerous.

I would wear the pink heels to work and brunches, and the black heels to parties and evenings out.

Work, Thirsty Thursdays and Loafers

Things at the new school are going well. I have a lot of catch-up but I think that once I get the hang of things it well be a good fit. All of the staff have been welcoming and helpful, which makes me feel more comfortable. The kids are settling into things, but we still have a long ways to go (my classroom is a mess!).

Today, there was a few of us that grabbed a bite to eat after work. We met up at San Pedro Square, the cute downtown section of San Jose. Roomie and I shared a pizza, salad, guacamole and crunchy tortilla chips. Unusual combination, but it was what my stomach wanted, and I was not going to argue with it. The food was yummy, and it was nice to see the other teachers relax and unwind together. Sometimes seeing people only at work makes it feel a bit impersonal, and this was great chance for me to get a better understanding of how interesting and cool some of my coworkers really are.

Last year, I was a bit idealistic and wore heels very often as a substitute teacher. It didn’t take very long to see that at some the campus’s (ahem, Los Gatos!) were too hilly/multilevel/had metal grates for my heels to be comfortable for the whole day. Soon I switched to flats, and found some loafers later in the year that became one of my go-to pairs along with my Sperry‘s.

Finishing a workday with happy feet make me approach the next day in a more upbeat manner.  This year, I have continued in the same comfy shoes vein. Flats and loafers are the way to go when you are standing or walking all day long. Fortunately enough, loafers have hit the fashion world and have been given a makeover. Some of the ones coming out for fall are pretty cute. Which ones do you like?

I think all of these would look great with a decent pair of skimmer jeans, and a crisp white collared shirt.
