Summer 2016

Hey!

Since you guys loved the Nantucket Video I made so much, I made another little montage of all the great things I did this summer. Since today is my first day with students at my new school, I created this early knowing I wouldn’t have time to write posts this week. I hope you like it!

It was one for the books, with travel, good times with friends and family! Are there any more videos I should make? Any topics you’d like to see covered?

How was your summer? Did you do anything you’ll remember in 20 years?

A wedding in Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe 2016

Mom and I flew back from NY into Lake Tahoe. Our dear neighbors were kind enough to drop us off and pick us up from our trip to the East Coast. We had a beautiful sunset on our drive over the hill to our house.

I had some friends from the Bay Area driving up to spend the weekend with us while they attended a wedding down near the Lake. They invited me to spend the day with them on Saturday and so we ate at an all you can eat sushi in Reno and had a ton of fun back at the house in the jacuzzi.

Kim and Aaron and their family left Monday morning, Dad, Cathy & Eduardo drove up to the house Monday afternoon. Mom and I spent most of the week with them, and I drove my little Prius home Thursday as I had to return to normal life and babysit. It was a sleepy week in Tahoe, we played board games a ton with our down the street high school & college neighbors, who are pretty cool kids. I also finally got a chance to use the kayaks with Cathy and Mom out on the lake, which was great and I can’t wait to get back out there on the water again.

I always come back from Tahoe well rested and relaxed and happy.

Do you have a place that you can “turn off” your brain at?

Senior Letters

Senior Letters

One of the traditions that I started at LPS was something we did all three years I was there. My high school (Go Spartans!) had a tradition of having the senior teachers write letters for a student they felt close to, and giving it to them their last week of high school. I continued that tradition at LPS and had other teachers and admin help me write a letter to all of our graduating students. We would pass them out at graduation (an event all our seniors would definitely be there for!) and help them celebrate their successes one last time.

I had the privilege of collecting and helping pass them out at graduation, and it was just a little reminder of how much I love my students and what I do. I hope I like my students and coworkers as much at my new job as I have loved my last.

Have you ever written a note of congratulations for someone? Anyone you mentored or watched them graduate from their program?

Life Lately

Girls Day at the Beach

So this is a few snaps from the last week! It’s only been one short week of summer, but I’ve packed a lot in.

Three beach days in one Week!
Sun Hats

A and I hitting up the beach on Tuesday. Sun hats are crucial to not ending up with a sunburnt nose!

Summer Sunsets

We’ve had some pretty amazing sunsets here in San Jose, and I tried to capture the gorgeous colors we got last week!

Capitola

We had a lovely mellow Father’s Day in Capitola with the whole fam (including the dog!) at a dog friendly beach, followed up by yummy food at Gayle’s Bakery.

How was your week? Do anything fun or summery?

Grad Night 2016

Grad Night 2016

Right after our Awards Ceremony last week, we rounded up all the seniors, boarded a party bus, and left for Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.  I had a small group of kiddos in my car, as I was the emergency vehicle driver, so if anything happens where we need to take a kid home, or to the hospital, I’m the get-away driver!

We jammed out to tunes in my car and make it to the park a little before 10. The sun was just setting as we unloaded from the bus and onto the tram to head into the park. We passed out wrist-bands, reviewed our meet-up time, and let them loose in the park!

Grad Night 2016
I kicked it with the teachers sometimes, but mostly hung with a group of awesome seniors. I was a passenger in the go-carts, and screamed my head off at his driving. Somehow being over tired makes things both more fun and more hilarious!

We gathered up all the kids at 4:30 and jumped onto the bus. The kids slept like babies the whole drive back to campus, so I put in headphones and played some TSwift to help me stay awake. After everyone was picked up, I went home and slept the day away.

It was such a great grad night, I’m so proud of you Class of 2016!

Awards Ceremony

The school year is drawing to a close! Last week on Thursday we had our awards ceremony, and it was truly amazing to see so many of our students standing there proudly with their awards. This year our kids have really risen to new academic heights, which is exciting!

When I think about where my students have come from, and how much work they have put into their education, I get a little teary eyed, and know that small things such as awards nights help validate their effort. I also love meeting and seeing students interact with their families, which is always so sweet.

Dear Students

Dear Students,

When I think about my school, I smell the wafting scent of freshly cut grass, eucalyptus trees, and hear the pitter patter of rain on a thin roof. I hear the hum and chatter of my students as they move from classroom to classroom, punctuated by a shriek of laughter or a bell ushering us to class. A small breeze drifts its way into my classroom, stirring my gauzy white curtains. I feel the sticky hot cold leather of my chair on my back and legs. I turn a worn down pencil in my hands round and round. “This pencil belongs to Miss Mahler” it reads, in cheery navy blue writing on a smudged white background, its eraser down to a small nub.  A back to school gift from my mother, who knows that school supplies will still make me excited for Fall.

I’ve finally perfected my first day of school smile, outfit and teacher sayings, after starting my first day once in September and twice in August here. I have no words to describe the pain of hearing that my school isn’t a viable option anymore, that the school board can’t measure the weight of my students smile’s and their sticky hugs like they do enrollment numbers and SAT scores. I have stood painfully in heels for dreadfully long back to school nights, but I would give all the shoes in my closet to have one more back to school night at my school with my rising seniors.

Just last week I was planning my fall rosters, gleefully picking which students would return in my honors class and which would return in my AP and actually looking forward to having three sections of sophomores. On Monday, I listened to 32 parents, students, graduates and siblings describe the impact that our school has had on them, tearfully begging and pleading with our school board to change their mind about making the 2015-2016 school year our last for our San Jose campus.

Most people have a job where they have “love to hate” conversations, where they bash things about their job, myself included have vented to my parents about various things. I’m human after-all. But my mother had to deal with my tearful phone call last week describing the immense and overwhelming loss I felt upon hearing that we, and our hard work over the last few years has been deemed not enough. It has been in the 1.5 weeks since hearing that our school will be closing, that I have really understood the “burnout feeling” that has been described to me by former teachers. The heart can only take so much before closing down or putting up walls. My students and I trudge towards the end of the year with a heavy heart. I am trying to treasure every last minute I have with them, and take mental pictures of their cute faces, of my classroom and it’s messy, loud, artsy, warm feel. I want each day to last forever, because I know I only have 12 more days with my seniors and a few more than that with my underclassman.

I hope to take enough pictures to last me a lifetime, because this is a hurt that will take a long time to heal.

Your blonde, quirky, loving art teacher, forever and always yours,

-S

Girls Spa Day

Two years ago A and I went up to the city to spend a day at a Spa. We loved it so much that we booked another day there this year. We started off at Cocoon Urban Day Spa with massages, and finished with a mani-pedi’s. I felt so relaxed after it was all done, perfect for heading into the week before AP exams! The whole place is beautiful and calming, with tea and cookies while you wait. I went for summery colors.

We followed our spa appointments up with a delicious dim sum lunch at Yank Sing. We took some silly photos while we were waiting for a table.

I find taking a Sunday day off from babysitting and grading to be with a girlfriend is exactly what  I need heading into a stressful time at work. I feel like the week starts off so much easier!

How do you find time to relax and unwind?
